Structural Replacement of Boom Braces

Project Overview
Kim Son Technology Service Co., Ltd was appointed by Sarens to execute the critical structural replacement of two (02) boom braces on a heavy-duty WO-Luffer crane (Crane Model/Serial No. 11 020). Works were performed on-site under strict safety and quality protocols to ensure zero disruption to the ongoing project schedule.
Scope of Work
1. Preparation
- New boom braces fabricated from certified high-strength steel with full material certificates
- Welding electrodes dried at 350 °C for 2 hours in controlled oven
2. Removal & Surface Preparation
- Safe removal of existing boom braces
- Precision grinding of boom chord connection surfaces
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) Level II performed on all prepared surfaces – no defects found
3. Fit-up & Welding
- Accurate fit-up of two new boom braces with temporary strongbacks
- Preheating of joint areas to required temperature
- Multi-pass welding executed by DNV/GL & AWS-certified welders using approved WPS/PQR
- Strict inter-pass temperature control maintained
4. Post-Weld Inspection (after minimum 24-hour hold)
- 100 % MPI on all four (04) welded joints
- Zero indications – all joints accepted as per code requirements
The Result
The boom structure was restored to full design strength and certified for continued heavy-lifting operations. All welding and NDT records, material certificates, and inspection reports were compiled into a comprehensive handover dossier for Sarens and the end client.
